Recently, there has been significant discussion regarding the expansion of the pétanque courts at Chimborazo Playground. As a club that has called this playground home for more than 20 years, we understand why many neighbors want to learn more about the project and how it came about.
The court expansion was proposed to accommodate growing participation, increase public programming opportunities, and strengthen a recreational amenity that has served the community for decades. While the project was approved through the City’s established process, many residents felt they did not receive enough notice before construction began. We respect those concerns and would like to provide background for those who don’t know us and our commitment to serving the entire community.
For more than 20 years, Les Boulefrogs Petanque Club has enjoyed being part of the Chimborazo Playground community. Throughout that time, our members have done far more than play pétanque. We have volunteered countless hours caring for the playground, organizing cleanups, planting trees, maintaining landscaping, supporting community events, and helping preserve this special public space for everyone.
We are grateful to the many neighbors who care deeply about Chimborazo Playground. We share that commitment. We also appreciate Richmond Parks and Recreation, City Council representatives, and the many residents who have taken time to engage in this discussion.
Our goal has always been simple: to develop a successful, publicly accessible recreational amenity that has served the community for two decades. The pétanque courts are open to the public and provide a free, welcoming space for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
Pétanque is one of the most accessible recreational activities available. It can be enjoyed by children, adults, seniors, veterans, people with mobility challenges, and individuals who may not be able to participate in more physically demanding sports. This sport brings neighbors together, creates friendships, and strengthens community connections.
The proposed court expansion follows a public process that began in 2024 and was reviewed and approved through the City’s established procedures. The project represents a modest use of space while providing significant community benefit. Most importantly, it expands a recreational amenity that already has an active and growing user base.
The value of these courts extends well beyond the sport itself. Les Boulefrogs hosts lessons, club tournaments, community events, and outreach programs. We are working with summer camp participants to introduce young people to the sport and are exploring future youth programming. We also plan to host coaching clinics, fundraisers (for playground improvements) and regional events that bring visitors and activity to the neighborhood.
Strong communities are built by people. We support continued conversations about future park improvements, communication, and community engagement. Those discussions are important and should continue. At the same time, we respectfully believe that the approved court expansion should move forward.
We remain committed to working collaboratively with neighbors, community organizations, and the City to ensure that Chimborazo Playground continues to be a vibrant, welcoming place for all. We welcome constructive ideas about programming, landscaping, beautification, and ways to make the space even more beneficial to the broader community.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed their time, energy, and passion to Chimborazo Playground.
